SWU’s national team duo expected to showcase full potential in coming Cesafi games
Although the Southwestern University (SWU) – Phinma scored a straight-sets victory over the Cebu Institute of Technology – University (CIT-U) last Sunday, national team members and Cobras teammates Dave Cabaron and John Carascal believe that they still have a lot more to show to their ecstatic Cebuano spike fans in their next games.
Both Cabaron and Carascal, who competed in the 29th Southeast Asian Games in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia last month, arrived in the country last Friday and reported back to their Cesafi team SWU on Saturday for the opening ceremonies of the Cesafi volleyball tournament.
“We are very overwhelmed because of the warm welcome of the Cebuanos,” said the 2015 Cesafi Most Valuable Player (MVP) Cabaron. “I really thank this organization (Cesafi) because without it, we wouldn’t be where we are now.”
Carascal, meanwhile, said he and Cabaron would now focus on helping SWU in the ongoing Cesafi wars, citing their need to adjust to the team’s setter.
“I think in the coming games, we need to improve more because we are adjusting with the new setter. The set play is a bit slower. It’s different with the training in Manila where everything is fast paced,” Carascal said.
SWU mentor Dave Arreza also noticed the unfamiliarity of both players with the team’s play in their first game. He hopes both Carascal and Cabaron can gel with their teammates in their next game against the University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) this Sunday.
“They’re still adjusting because the style in Manila and the style in Cebu are different. Hopefully next week they’ll be able to have better chemistry with the team,” said Arreza.
