FRAT VIOLENCE

The police rescue of two teenage girls who were about to undergo hazing from the Alpha Kappa Rho fraternity in Consolacion town drew strong reactions from netizens who were angered by the frat violence.

Facebook user Dela Serna Sonny said, “These groups should be banned by the government. If they only bring violence, they are not useful to society. The government should create a law to ban fraternities.”

Anne Marie Pepito shared her frustration on the victims. “You, girls should have just focused on your studies. Your parents are working very hard to send you to school. You should be thankful to them instead of giving them problems. Joining fraternities doesn’t prove anything.”

Dref Ichigo said fraternities “should create another way of welcoming members.” “I think it’s a better idea to let new members clean the barangay or the drainage. That’s more beneficial.”

Yanyan Light Demos said fraternities should abandon their culture of violence associated with their initiation rites. “Maybe they can ask those who want to join the group to donate a sack of rice, repack them and give them to poor families. That’s how it should be. No violence.”
