USC,SHS-AdC top Cesafi swimfest

THE University of San Carlos (USC) Warriors and the Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu (SHS-AdC) Magis Eagles swept the swimming titles in the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc., (Cesafi) swimming competitions at the Cebu City Sports Center yesterday.

The Warriors earned 12 gold, three silver, and three bronze medals in the tertiary women’s division. It also added a 10-9-8 harvest in the men’s category for a combined total of 22-12-11 and the overall crown in the collegiate division.

The University of Cebu (UC) finished second in the tertiary category with a total harvest of 9-7-3 while the University of the Visayas was a distant third with a 1-6-5 tally.

In the secondary battles, the Magis Eagles emerged on top after capturing 13 golds, six silvers, and three bronzes in the boys division and a 10-7-6 haul in the girls competition for a 17-15-8 combined total.

UC finished second overall with a 11-9-12 total.

Top individual performers

Antonne Villahermosa topped the individual haul for the Warriors with four golds and a silver while teammate Pia Cardinal had two golds and two silvers.

In the secondary division, Magis Eagle Johann Tubesa topscored with five gold medals including a record-breaking swim in the 200-meter backstroke where he submitted a new time of 2 minutes, 32.30 seconds to break Andrei Ynclino’s 16-year mark of 2:32.31.

He also broke his old record of 58.25 seconds in the 100m freestyle with a new time of 58.05 seconds.

Meanwhile, University of Cebu’s Junvic Tiro set two new swim records in secondary boys yesterday.

First he reset Tubesa’s mark of 1:09.00 in the 100m backstroke a new time of 1:08.55 and the 50m breaststroke record of Andrew Dequina of 32.81 seconds with a new time of 32.51 secs.

The UC girls (2:24.14) also bettered the 4x50m IM relay record (2:28.29) they established in 2010 while the USC girls clocked 2:08.22 to shatter the old 4x50m freestyle relay record of 2:13.03 set by UC last year.
