Out to break finals curse

USC boys v’ball

After two straight championship heartbreaks in the Cesafi boys volleyball tournament, the University of San Carlos (USC) is dead set on reclaiming the title it once held firmly.

The USC boys team was the champion in the 2013 and 2014 seasons and was buzzing at the prospect of a Baby Warriors dynasty until it lost to the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) in two games in the 2015 finals.

USC failed again the next year as it blew its 1-0 finals lead against the University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) and eventually lost, 1-2.
The Baby Warriors are back in the championship round for the fifth straight year, and they hope to finally shatter the curse this time around.

“Our target this year was to make the finals because last year’s loss was really painful, and we will try to make up for our loss last year,” said USC boys mentor Jonrey Sasing.

But it won’t be easy for USC as it is up against a Southwestern University (SWU)- Phinma team that won against the Baby Warriors in their past two meetings.

Interestingly, USC has won the opening sets of those two games against SWU-Phinma.

“What we need to prepare now is just to maintain our momentum from start to finish because the first set was always ours, but they are complacent in the next sets,” Sasing said. “What we will try in the finals is to maintain the same intensity in the game from start to finish.”

The best-of-three finals series between USC and SWU-Phinma will get underway this Saturday.
