Jaguars books last ticket to semifinals, thanks to CIT-U
WITH a little help from the Cebu Institute of Technology – University (CIT-U), the defending champions University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) managed to keep its title-retention bid alive as it advanced to the round-robin semifinals of the F2 Logistics Cesafi men’s volleyball tournament yesterday at the University of San Carlos (USC) Main gym.
Prior to the game, the Spiking Jaguars were tied with the University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) at fourth spot with identical 2-3 (win-loss) records. They not only needed a victory against the University of Cebu (UC) but also hoped for a loss by the Panthers to CIT-U to clinch the last semis spot.
USJ-R took care of its business by scoring a dominating 25-10, 25-14, 25-17 victory over UC. CIT-U then did the rest for USJ-R when it pulled off a thrilling 21-25, 20-25, 25-23, 25-17, 15-11 triumph over USPF, sealing the semis cast.
CIT-U clinched the third spot with a 4-2 (win-loss) card behind Southwestern University – (SWU) Phinma’s 5-1 and the University of the Visayas’ (UV) 6-0 records. USJ-R bagged the last semis spot with a 3-3 slate.
The round-robin semis action in men’s play will begin next Saturday with USJ-R taking on UV and CIT-U battling SWU-Phinma.
Meanwhile, the round-robin semifinal in women’s play starts today at the USPF gym as top-seed SWU-Phinma takes on USPF while USJ-R goes up against USC.
