Cebu City gymnasts continue to haul golds
Tagbilaran City — After a slow start, perennial champions Cebu City started to get going in the Central Visayas Regional Athletic Association (Cviraa) meet held in the gateway to the island province of Bohol.
In the unofficial medal standings of this annual multisporting meet that will determine the composition of the Central Visayas team to this year’s Palarong Pambansa, Cebu City has already accumulated 54 gold medals, 15 silvers and 12 bronze medals.
The Niños’ bulk of gold medals came from its gymnastics team, which harvested 24 of the 32 gold medals at stake at the Dauis Gymnasium in the outskirts of Tagbilaran City.
Bohol Province is currently at second place in the medal standings with a 19-9-11 (gold-silver-bronze) harvest after day two followed by Cebu Province with a 9-10-8 tally. Tagbilaran City (8-1-0) and Mandaue City (4-8-7) are fourth and fifth, respectively.
Cebu City yesterday bagged three gold medals in gymnastics, two from Leanne Marie Manning, who ruled the rhythmic gymnastics’ rope and freehand events. Ace gymnast Daniela Reggie dela Pisa chipped in one gold in the rope routine of the secondary girls competition.
The rhythmic gymnastics competition was still ongoing as of press time.
There were also 15 golds contributed by Cebu City jins in taekwondo poomsae competition held at the Manansa gymnasium, four golds from its swimmers vying at the University of Bohol (UB) pool, and three from its powerhouse athletics squad competing at the Carlos P. Garcia Sports Complex.
In taekwondo, the Niños bagged 12 gold medals in the poomsae (form) event and three from the kyurogi (sparring) event care of Gabrielle Niño Tenchavez (category 5 elementary boys), Mariah Lavine Claracar (elementary girls’ category 4) and Maria Lita Angelica Degoda (category 6 elementary girls).
The four golds in swimming were from its elementary girls relay team that topped the 200m medley relay, Andrew Kim Remolino (400m freestyle secondary boys), Karen Mae Indaya (400m freestyle secondary girls), and Juliet Sedeno (100m backstroke elementary girls).
Jhuvan Jhem Baculot bounced back from her silver in long jump by topping the secondary triple jump (10.99 meters), Martchan Torregosa won a gold in the secondary boys 400m hurdles and Niño Vincent Colis ruled the 110m hurdles for the three golds of Cebu City in athletics.
Meanwhile, Mandaue City won three gold medals in swimming care of Sophia Maxine Chua (200m butterfly secondary girls), Loraine Hann (100m backstroke secondary girls), and Kent Franzen Cagape (200m butterfly).
Cebu Province also won on the tracks courtesy of Oliver Aliganga and Princess Jean Nalzaro, who topped the long jump and 100m hurdles in the secondary division, respectively. It also won a gold medal in the elementary poomsae of taekwondo via Manuel Motivo Jr.
