Youth from outside Cebu City take part in CCSC’s free summer sports clinic
CEBU City traffic enforcer Roberto Lim just got off his 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. shift.
But instead of going home, he decided to drop by the Mabolo Elementary School to see his four-year-old daughter train in dancesports for the first time under the free Summer Grassroots Sports Training Program of the Cebu City Sports Commission (CCSC), which kicked off yesterday in public elementary schools around the city.
Lim said that his daughter has always shown interest in dancing and he sees the training program as an excellent way for his daughter to spend her summer.
Lim lauds the CCSC program because it is free and takes children not only off the streets but off gadgets as well as they do not want their children hooked on cellphones and tablets.
Lim’s family is from Pagsabungan, Mandaue and said that his wife and daughter has to take two rides to get to Mabolo as he has not heard of the same program implemented in Mandaue City. They, however, do not mind the long trip because the program is free and it is what their daughter wants.
Ann Deposa, the MES PESS coordinator, said that aside from Mandaue, they also got participants coming from as far as Liloan. She added that they decided to accept them because the training program is open to all youth and not just those residing in Cebu City.
The number of participants is expected to rise within the week as yesterday was a holiday and some of the kids have still not come home from their Holy Week vacation. The participants are free to try whatever sports until they settle on a particular sport that they want to train in regularly, which normally takes two to three days from the first day of the program.
Training will be held every afternoon from Monday to Friday. Interested participants can go to their chosen venue. For more details, they can call the CCSC office at (032) 520-8839.
