AROUND 200  bikers including  Cebu City officials cycled around Cebu City last night to promote the use of bicycles and to show support for the proposed bike lane ordinance.

Vice Mayor Edgar Labella and  Councilors Joel Daluz, Noel Wenceslao, Mary Ann Delos Santos and Roberto Cabarrubias joined the cycling activity.

The cyclists passed through Pelaez Street, Osmeña Boulevard, Fuente Osmeña, Tisa, B. Rodriguez, and N. Bacalso Ave.

Councilor Gerry Carillo said the activity promotes the bicycle as an alternative mode of transport in Cebu City that reduces air pollution.

The group had a similar outing during  Earth Hour last week.

“Biking is very advantageous because people can save on the cost of  transportation. It’s  also good for their health,” he said.
The group called Sugbo Bikers plans to make the activity twice a month, and to reach the  city’s mountain barangays.

“We also want to check the road conditions in Cebu City so that we can address the problems,” he said.

Aside from members of the Sugbo Bikers, he also encouraged nonmembers to join in their advocacy.

The Cebu city government recently  purchased two mountains for each of the barangays  to be used for peacekeeping functions, patrols and emergency response.
“We provided two bikes to each barangay so that they can participate in our activity,” he added.
