CORDOVA, Cebu, Philippines — Presidential Anti-Corruption Commission (PACC)  Chairman Dante Jimenez said they are dissapointed with the “hasty” investigation into the death of 16-year-old Christine Lee Silawan.

Jimenez said that the arrest of the 17-year-old prime suspect in Silawan’s gruesome murder was done “carelessly,” which led to his release by the Lapu-lapu Regional Trial Court (RTC) today, March 23.

For Jimenez, the investigation showed lacked of coordination between the National Bureau of Investigation in Central Visayas (NBI-7) and the Police Regional Office in Central Visayas (PRO-7).

“Hindi ako masaya sa investigation. Masyadong madaming loopholes,” he said.

Jimenez hoped that the NBI-7 and PRO-7 can consolidated their investigation in order to find the real suspect in the crime.

“Wag ganitong nag-uunahan tayo magfile ng complaint (against the suspect). I challenge these agencies to please, please solve this crime,” he said.

“I’m saying it here in the very grave of Christine, this is the worst desecration to the human body,” added Jimenez, who spoke to reporters shortly after the remains of Silawan was laid to rest at the Cattleya Cemetery in Cordova town on Mactan Island.

Jimenez said it was  most likely that the suspect executed an affidavit without the aid of a  lawyer,  which prompted the court to order his release.

He said that the case was a simple violation of the Miranda doctrine, which is often said to suspects upon arrest, informing them of their rights to be silent and the right to talk to a lawyer before answering any question during interrogations, and that the government will provide a legal counsel in the case that suspect cannot afford his own.

“I condemn this kind of situation (illegal arrest). Masyadong minamadali,” he said.

He said that with the developments of the case, PACC will be extending legal help to Silawan’s family so they can get the justice that they deserve./elb
