Cebu City, Philippines — It was only a matter of time before reigning Cesafi MVP Rey Anthony Suerte finally played to his potential and the 6-foot-2 wingman showed a glimpse of it on Monday, March 25, 2019, as he compiled career-high numbers in leading the Che’Lu Revellers to a 109-99 win over McDavid in the PBA D-League.

The University of the Visayas (UV) product posted 26 points on a 10-of-17 clip from the field along with five rebounds, two assists and two blocks.

In a talk afterwards, Suerte relayed that now with the “honeymoon stage” out of the way, he’s getting more and more comfortable playing with his teammates and in the system of head coach Stevenson Tiu.

“At first, medyo nagkakapaan pa sa mga teammates nako kay mao lage bag-o lang nako sila nakauban. But now confident na ko kay kabalo na ko sa mga duwa sa matag usa namo,” said Suerte, the pride of Monkayo in Compostela Valley.

(At first, I  was still getting to know my teammates because I was new to the team. But now I’m already confident because we all know each other’s games.)

More crucial than how much Suerte scored was when he scored as he put up six of the Revellers’ last eight points to keep McDavid at bay after leading by as many as 29 points.

Suerte also said that the time he gets to spend with his teammates outside of the playing court also helps him.

“Then lahi ra jud atong last few months kay medyo naa pay uwaw-uwaw. Pero na lahi na karon kay naa nami bond . Mao dali nalang karon kay approachable na tanan mga teammates nako,” said Suerte.

(The last few months were really different because there was a bit of shyness. But everything’s different now because we already have a bond. That’s why it’s easier now since all my teammates are approachable.)

It also helps to be blessed with a green light from Tiu himself.

“Ana sad si coach na agresibo jud ko dapat whenever I am on the floor,” Suerte added.
