Dengue kills two persons in San Remigio

CEBU CITY, Philippines — Two dengue fatalities have been reported from the town of San Remigio in the midst of the dry season in the province of Cebu.

According to the latest situation report from the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO), 

Based on the latest situation report from the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) 52 dengue cases have been reported in the town of San Remigio, 109 km north of Cebu City.

Meanwhile, 90 cases have been reported in the town of Tuburan.

The report also noted an increase of dengue cases in the municipality of Tabuelan.

“Sa ka init (sa panahon), ang lamok aggressive… Mas mopaak (ang lamok). And because of the heat mas mu taas lifespan sa mga lamok,” said Rhee Telen Jr. of PDRRMO

(Because of the hot weather, mosquitos become more aggressive. They (mosquitos) will bite more. And because of the heat, their lifespan becomes longer.)

The rising cases are attributed to unsealed water containers, which is a breeding ground for dengue-carrying mosquitos.

Telen also said that the Department of Health had ranked Central Visayas with the highest increase of dengue cases due to El Niño, which is over 76 percent.

With this development, the PDRRMO is the public to be conscious about their water storage especially during the onset of the dry spell./dbs
