Semifinal cast in Governor’s Cup hoops set

Cebu City, Philippines—The basketball squads of the municipalities of Balamban and Minglanilla completed the semifinal cast of the 2019 Governor’s Cup basketball tournament on Sunday, April 28, 2019, after the final games of the quarterfinal round that were held at two separate venues.

Balamban trumped Medellin, 76-71, to grab the last ticket to the Final Four, joining the powerhouse Mandaue City Ballers, which completed a sweep of the quarters with a resounding 102-87 win over Dumanjug at the Mandaue City Cultural and Sports Complex.

Paul Sungahid led the way for the Ballers with 21 points while Kenneth Brillo and Gabriel Cometa added 13 and 12 markers, respectively.

Meanwhile, Jacob Fernandez paced Balamban’s attack with 21 points while Joshua Gellacone put up 18.

Mandaue topped Bracket A with an untarnished 6-0 win-loss mark while Balamban ended up with a 5-1 record.

Over in Bracket B, the Minglanilla Archangels emerged with the best quotient score in a three-way tie involving Tuburan and Consolacion.

All three ended up with identical 4-2 win-loss cards after the Talisay City Aquastars drubbed Tuburan, 92-81, while the Sarok Weavers upended Tabuelan, 107-97, in games that were held at the Talisay City Sports Complex.

After the computations were done, Minglanilla tallied a 1.048, beating Tuburan’s 1.006 and Consolacion’s 0.949.

The semifinals will see Mandaue taking on Minglanilla and Talisay facing Balamban.

Officials of the teams advancing to the next round are set to meet to finalize the details of their match-ups. /bmjo
