Cebu City, Philippines—The Balamban Shipbuilders claimed third place with a 77-71 win over the Minglanilla Archangels in the 2019 Governor’s Cup basketball tournament on Thursday, May 9, 2019 at the Mandaue City Sports and Cultural Complex.

The win let Balamban bag the P200,000 cash prize while Minglanilla settled for P100,000.

Jacob Fernandez paced the Shipbuilders with 22 points, eight rebounds and six assists while Marvin Cortez added 15 points and 11 rebounds. Albert Sacayan ended up with 13.

Balamban led by as much as 18 before Minglanilla rallied to briefly take the lead in the third. However, an unsportsmanlike foul called on Archangels’ ace guard Ryzel Gilbuena sent him to the bench at the midway point of the fourth.

Sensing an advantage, Balamban seized the moment and rattled off a brief run led by Fernandez to push ahead and stay there until the final buzzer.
