Rama appeals for end to MCIA row

Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama has joined the call for the Department of Transportation and Communication (DOTC) to resolve the delay in the awarding of the Mactan Cebu Airport expansion project.

He asked Vice Mayor Edgar Labella to deliver a privilege speech to appeal to the DOTC to award the project to the winning contractor.

“The city should speak and whatever is the conclusion on the MCIA project should be urgently done because it will bring us to be more prepared for the APEC summit and the International Eucharistic Congress,” he said in a press conference.

Rama disapproves of strategies being made in bringing up concerns on the airport expansion through newspaper advertisements. He said the ads only add to the Cebuanos’ confusion.

“Whoever is aggrieved, they can bring it to court,” he said.

Rama said Cebu needs the airport expansion project so that a new airport terminal can be made available when Cebu hosts the APEC summit next year and the International Eucharistic Congress in 2016.

The Cebu City government’s stand on the issue should be heard by the national government because the city contributes much to the national coffers, he said.

Rama said Cebu as a whole needs a new airport terminal in its campaign to become a tourism hub and for economic development.
