Following the successful staging of the Cebu City Mayor’s Cup, exciting amateur basketball action now shifts over to Mandaue as the Mandaue City Mayor’s Cup unfolds today at the Mandaue City Cultural and Sports Complex.
After the San Beda Red Lions came over to showcase their brand of basketball that have allowed them to capture seven of the last eight titles in the NCAA, UAAP powerhouse National University (NU) will be following suit as they are set to compete in this tournament later in the week.
NU is expected to parade two familiar faces in former Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu (SHS-AdC) stalwarts Dave Wilson Yu and Rendell Senining. Yu also happens to be the team captain of the Philippine under-18 national team.
Originally known as the Raphael’s Cup, it has been transformed into this five-day tilt which is organized in cooperation with the Mandaue City Sports Commission.
In today’s play date, Cesafi and PCCL runner-up Southwestern University (SWU) open up the hostilities when they battle the Raphael’s Café squad of sports patron Raffy Senining.
The nightcap will feature the University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancers against the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) Jaguars.
The six participating teams have been bracketed into two groups with Group A comprised of SWU, Raphael’s Café and NU. Group B will have UV, USJ-R and the University of Cebu.
The champion squad will pocket P30,000 while the runner-up will bag P20,000. The third, fourth and fifth placers will take home P15,000, P10,000 and P5,000, respectively.
