SM offers to build roads for tax credits

OFFICIALS of SM Seaside City expressed interest to help fund construction of commercial roads near their complex at the South Road Properties (SRP) in exchange for tax credits.

Sherry Tuvila, the mall’s Visayas region operations manager, proposed this in a March 28 letter to the Cebu City Council.

The council referred their request to the budget and laws committees and the Department of Engineering and Public Works (DEPW) during their April 23 session.

Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama said giving tax credits to businesses is discouraged under his administration.

He said if businesses help develop city roads, this should be done under their corporate social responsibility.

Rama said SM management agreed to help beautify S. Osmeña Road at the North Reclamation Area.

Agreeing to their offer, Rama said, would also mean confining development projects in areas where businesses are located.
