AUTOLAB bucked the lofty odds and beat fierce rivals San Remegio Properties, 74-69, to claim the championship in the Elite division of the Indie Basketball Cebu in the finals held last week at the Pope John XXIII Seminary gym in barangay Mabolo, Cebu City.
For the second year in a row, Autolab of team manager Juhndale Singuran and head coach Jabby Bautista denied San Remegio the crown and did it against the latter’s super-sized team manned by Cagayan Valley Rising Suns big man Edrian Lao, former University of the Visayas ace Randy dela Pisa and ex-University of San Jose-Recoletos slotman Kurt Amores.
San Remegio, though, was cut down to size with the speed of Autolab, which had to play without star forward, former Adamson Falcon forward Mark Abadia, who was disqualified because of supposed eligibility issues.
Taking up the slack were former Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) all-stars Mike Cantonao and Jerome Silva, who tallied 17 and 16 points, respectively.
Cantonao, a former gunner of the University of San Carlos, was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player.
