Heritage night to kick off at 6 p.m. on May 30

Six hours for over  30 historical and cultural destinations, all in just one night with all four cities of Metro Cebu represented, highlights this year’s “Gabii sa Kabilin” (Heritage Night).

The 8th staging of the event will be on May 30 and will kick off at 6 p.m., officials of the Ramon Aboitiz Foundation Inc., the lead organizer of the annual event.

The event, which also celebrates the International Museums Day and the National Heritage Month, is also sanctioned by the Department of Tourism, the National Commission on Culture and the Arts as well as the provincial and city governments of Cebu, Lapu-Lapu, Mandaue and Talisay.

This year’s theme, “Rise of the Queen” reflects the event’s  focus on how Cebu, the “Queen City of the South,” developed and become the most prominent metropolis in southern Philippines.

“As Cebu positions itself to become a global and more ‘livable’ city, the story of the rise of Cebu would be retold in the Gabii sa Kabilin,” a RAFI statement said.

Everyone, therefore, is encouraged to reserve tickets now for this night of cultural shows, special exhibits, children’s activities, food fairs, and other fun-filled and educational activities.

For ticket reservations, contact any of the participating museums and heritage sites. The phone numbers of the sites and updates on Gabii sa Kabilin can be had at www.rafi.org.ph. Interested individuals and groups may also call (032) 418-7234 loc. 703.

The Gabii sa Kabilin is initiated by the Ramon Aboitiz Foundation, Inc. (RAFI) with the cooperation of participating museums, the local government units of the cities of Cebu, Lapu-Lapu, Mandaue and Talisay, and the province of Cebu, Department of Tourism – Central Visayas and the National Commission for Culture and the Arts.

The theme, “Rise of the Queen”, aims to motivate and inspire Cebuanos to help achieve the goal of the province to become the ‘most liveable’ city while also developing economically, hence, the event reflects this  by focusing on periods in history when Cebu was experiencing economic growth.

Dr. Jocelyn Gerra, executive director of the RAFI Culture & Heritage Unit, said that the upcoming Gabii sa Kabilin 2014 event has evolved  from its humble beginnings in 2007 that featured only three Cebu City museums.

Gerra added the event helps participants, especially Cebuanos “appreciate who we are” and gives insights into our culture, equating Gabii sa Kabilin 2014 to “a tidal wave of heritage awareness”. /UP Cebu intern Gerriane Rizon
