Arnis, athletics donate golds for Cebu City in 2014 PNG

Irenedin Lepatan led the gold medal harvest of Team Cebu City yesterday after winning in arnis midway through the ongoing action in the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC)-Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) Philippine National Games 2014 at Riverbanks, Marikina City.

Lepatan bagged a gold after dominating the Female Artistic Tunggal, while Emraida Hernandez of Zamboanga A and Aprilyn Nevarez of Navotas A settled for the silver and bronze medals, respectively.

Aside from Lepatan, also chipping in a gold medal was Clair Diongson after he reigned supreme in the 10,000-meter walk of the juniors division at the Philsports Complex in Pasig City.

Diongson took home the gilt in the event after clocking in at 1 hour, 4 minutes and 14 seconds to defeat rivals Joseph Oliver Cellona of the University of the Philippines and John Lloyd Lamaclamac of the University of Sto. Tomas.

The Cebu City boxing team was also on a roll. Its boxers made their way to  the semifinal round at the RMSC basketball stadium.

With head coach Jordan Dopalco at the helm, three Cebuano pugs in Ramjes Colina and Ian Refuella of Southwestern University and Rodex Piala barged into the Elite division’s semifinal round after overpowering their respective foes in the quarterfinals.

SWU’s Colina arranged a semis duel versus Sultan Kudarat’s Benjie Oliveros in the elite category’s 60-kg division, while Piala will battle Cagayan de Oro City’s Marvin Esquirdo in the 56-kg division. Refuella faces off against Sultan Kudarat’s Arnold Montales.

The youth boys division’s 46-49 kg. category will be an all-Cebu semifinals with Marco Pomar and Junrel Jimenez scheduled to fight against each other, while the other pairings for Cebu in the semis are; Hipolito Banal versus Misamis Oriental’s Marvin Tabamo (52kg), Jeffrey Estella versus Oriental Mindoro’s Abraham Bullagay (56kgs) and Kit Garces versus Palawan’s Eljay Loreto (48kgs.).

The University of San Carlos Warriors’ Jean Jacque Antigua, John Martin Galinato, Deniezelle Scott Aying and Kent John Malazarte under head coach Ope Abellana chipped in  a silver in the 3-on-3 basketball competition after losing to San Juan.
