Rama eyeing Sokor tech for Inayawan landfill

Landfill

Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama said he wanted to adopt a technology used in South Korea to convert the plastic materials of the Inayawan Sanitary Landfill into fuel that could serve as replacement to coal.

Rama said an investor wanted to acquire the technology and bring it to the city while another one wanted to put up a similar investment at the South Road Properties (SRP).

Rama showed reporters a photos of his visit to Seoul, Korea last weekend.

“I am showing you this because I wanted you to know that there is hope for the Inayawan landfill,” he said.

Rama said his plan to convert the Inayawan landfill into a valuable piece of real property is no longer a dream.

Attraction

“This was only a dream before, but a technology has been developed. And the technology is better than mitigation,” Rama said.

He said he didn’t want to go into the specifics of the technology that he referred to pending ongoing discussions.

Rama visited the Cheonggyecheon Stream to observe how the water body was converted into a tourism attraction where people can walk around or sit on a corner to dip their feet into the stream.

The stream, he said, is found under a five kilometer road built years back.

Rama said he dreams of also converting the three-meter easement of the Guadalupe River from barangay Guadalupe to Ermita into a park where people and even tourists could frolic.

Processed

From the Cheonggyecheon Stream, he and City Administrator Lucelle Mercado proceeded to an old landfill site in Seoul which is now the site of a mall that is already nearing completion.
A big portion of the 15-hectare lot is occupied by a mall.

On a small corner of the property is a dome -type structure where Seoul’s garbage is being processed into fuel.

Rama ordered the Inayawan landfill closed in 2011.

But to this day the city still doesn’t have its landfill closure program that will spell out the government’s plan for the 15-hectare property that remains filled with mountains of garbage.

The mayor said if ongoing discussions push through, “later on” the Inayawan landfill will be available as a real estate.”
