Opposition impressed with Davide report

Cebu Gov. Hilario Davide III’s first “Report to the People” last Monday drew positive feedback even from the province’s political opposition.

His 40-minute speech was only applauded at the end, but provincial board members, municipal mayors and congressmen who attended his address said they were satisfied with his first annual report.

Provincial Board Member Sun Shimura of One Cebu said Davide fared well in his first year as governor, considering the three calamities – the ship collision in August, earthquake in October and supertyphoon in November – that the province had to go through in the past year. “His report coincides with the progress of recovery we see in the north, and that’s good.

The municipalities there received great help, especially the farmers,” said Shimura.

Daanbantayan Mayor Augusto Corro said he is quite satisfied with the progress the provincial government made in terms of rehabilitation plans for Cebu, especially for the typhoon-stricken north. “I think (Davide) has done his part.

The rehabilitation plan is not within his control (anymore),” said Corro, referring to the P12.2 billion rehabilitation plan for Cebu approved by the Office of the Presidential Assistant for Rehabilitation and Recovery (OPARR). PB Member Joven Mondigo Jr. (One Cebu) said he is also contented with the governor’s report, placing emphasis on the development in medical services and post-Yolanda projects. “I’m really satisfied with his report.

As a matter of fact, I always present my 100 percent support to all his programs,” said Mondigo. Meanwhile, Rep. Wilfredo Caminero of Cebu’s 2nd district said Davide’s report was “holistic.” “There are no big or small plans covered in his report – he paid attention to everything and I have to appreciate that,” said Caminero. On the other hand, Cebu 1st District Rep.

Gerald Anthony “Samsam” Gullas expressed his excitement over undertakings of the current provincial administration that were highlighted in the governor’s report. “I’m really excited with the establishment of the Provincial Youth Commission and what it can offer to the youth of Cebu.

I’m also really excited for the Trans-Axial Highway and what it can bring to the province,” he said. Sta. Fe Mayor Jose Esgana said Davide displayed “transparency and accountability” in his report to the people and hopes that all mayors in the province might draw guidance from it.

“That was the first report I heard that is really factual and spoken from the heart,” said Esgana.
