A 54-YEAR-OLD Japanese tourist died after he lost consciousness while scuba diving in the waters off barangay Maribago, Lapu-Lapu City Monday morning.

Yuichi Sugiyama of Saitama, Japan, was declared dead on arrival at the Mactan Doctors’ Hospital.

Investigation revealed that Sugiyama, a guest at the Shangri-La’s Mactan Island Resort and Spa, went diving with a female Japanese diving instructor at 7 a.m. Monday at the Kontiki Wall in barangay Maribago.

While underwater, the instructor noticed that Sugiyama was feeling uncomfortable. They immediately surfaced, but the tourist was already unconscious.

They returned to the resort to get help in bringing Sugiyama to the hospital but he did not make it alive.

His body was taken to Rolling Hills funeral parlor in Mandaue City for autopsy to determine the cause of his death.
