MANILA, Philippines — Some provinces will revert from the lenient modified general community quarantine (MGCQ) to the more stringent GCQ in February, Malacañang announced on Thursday, January 28, 2021.

Presidential spokesperson Harry Roque, however,  did not disclose which areas will shift to the stricter quarantine measures so as not to preempt President Rodrigo Duterte’s final decision.

“Napakahirap po kasi magsalita kasi talagang nirereserba natin kay Presidente yung desisyon,” Roque said in an interview on Teleradyo.

(It’s hard to speak because we are reserving the decision to be announced by the President.)

“Ang importante po sa ganitong punto ay ikumpirma na may mga lugar tayo na magkakaroon ng escalation po from MGCQ, magiging GCQ,” he added.

(What’s important is at this point, we can confirm that there are areas which will have an escalation from MGCQ to GCQ.)

The Department of Health has endorsed stricter quarantine measures for the Cordillera Administrative Region due to an increase in Covid-19 cases.

Meanwhile, Metro Manila mayors are in favor of extending the capital region’s GCQ status amid the detection of the new Covid-19 variant in the country, Metro Manila Council chairman and Parañaque City Mayor Edwin Olivarez said.
