CEBU CITY, Philippines — A Cebu City councilor is asking the Department of Manpower Development and Placement (DMDP) to hold virtual job fairs for residents.

In a resolution passed by the City Council this week, Councilor Alvin Dizon has expressed the need for more job opportunities for residents suffering from the economic impact of the pandemic.

“While there are many people losing jobs and many companies are halting operations, there are still companies who are hiring and many are turning to virtual platforms to find candidates to fill in positions,” said the councilor.

For the councilor, the DMDP can adapt a virtual job fair to keep the candidates and employer safe from the spreading coronavirus.

Digital technology can be maximized to help bring the candidates closer to the employers through these job fairs, Dizon said.

The City Council agreed with Dizon and urged the DMDP to consider using the digital platform for job fairs so employers can simply send out job postings and applicants can easily find them in an online platform managed by the city government.

The DMDP has been told to partner with private establishments for the virtual job fair.

The DMDP, for their part, has been continuously conducting livelihood programs around the city.

The agency has beem touring the 80 barangays conducting livelihood training for unemployed residents, especially those who lost their jobs during the pandemic.

“Here in the DMDP, we hold livelihood training per barangay. We schedule it for displaced workers, solo parents, housewives, and others who can benefit the programs,” said Shiela Daluz the head of DMDP.

Livelihood kits are distributed to beneficiaries to help them start learning a new craft that can be a source of livelihoods like sewing, pottery, and other crafts.

Councilor Dizon hopes that the DMDP will consider the council’s suggestion so the city can help bridge employers to those seeking employment. /rcg
