Cebu City Hall ready for transpo strike despite withdrawal of some transport groups
The Cebu City government made preparations for next Monday’s transport strike despite assurances by two transport groups that they won’t join the nationwide protest action.
Ryan Yu, president of Cebu Integrated Transport Service Cooperative (Citrasco) said they and Romeo Armamento, head of Mandaue City’s Drivers Association won’t join the rally this Monday after meeting with Transport Secretary Jun Abaya in Manila today.
The meeting was arranged by Rep. Raul Del Mar of Cebu City’s north district.
But Cebu City Hall will continue to deploy more than 100 Kaoshsiung and barangay buses in specific routes in the city.
A 6×6 military truck from Central Command will also be used to help ferry stranded passengers. Ceres buses are also allowed to ply major thoroughfares for a fee of P10.
“Let’s not be complacent. Let’s continue with it, let’s run the buses for the commuters,” City Councilor Dave Tumulak said when sought for comment on the planned withdrawal by some transport groups.
The buses will be fielded as early as 5 am on Monday. Tumulak said commuters should get out earlier to avoid being stranded and late for class or work.
He also suggested that people shouldn’t use their private vehicles or do carpooling to avoid congesting traffic. Tumulak also requested schools to field their buses to fetch their students as well as those from other schools.
“Classes will not be suspended. We’re not afraid of them (transport groups holding strike). A strike should not impede education of our students,” he said
Though there will be continued loop routes within Cebu City there will also be drop off points for those in neighboring cities.
Buses from Talisay City will stop at Malacañang sa Sugbo where there will be buses going to north of Cebu City
Those from Mandaue will stop at the back of SM where there will also be buses.
With or without a transport strike on Monday, the Cebu City government will continue fielding more than a hundred buses to ferry passengers.
