CEBU CITY, Philippines — The Cebu City Liga ng mga Barangays will provide financial aid to the family of the late Luz Barangay Captain Ronilio Sab-a, who died in a drowning incident in Liloan town on February 12, 2021.

Councilor Franklyn Ong, the president of the Association of Barangay Councils (ABC), said in a statement that the Liga Ng mga Barangays (LNB) have prepared burial assistance for the family of Sab-a.

“In our own little way, the LNB Family has prepared financial assistance to help the bereaved family of our deceased members in the midst of this grieving moment. Our prayers for the eternal peace of Kap. Ronnie,” said Ong in the statement.

The burial assistance amounts to at least P30,000 and will be provided to the family of Sab-a to help defray the cost of his interment.

“It came as a shock to have learned about the sudden demise of a dear friend and colleague in public service. I’ve known Kap. Ronnie Sab-a to be a dedicated and respectable leader. In times of need, we’d always share a helping hand especially since we come from neighboring barangays.”

“His passing is truly a great loss to the people of Barangay Luz. On behalf of The Liga ng mga Barangay of Cebu City, we extend our sincerest sympathies to all the loved ones he has left behind,” said Ong.

Sab-a died in a drowning incident while on a vacation at a beach in Liloan town, northern Cebu. He was brought to the Eversley Childs Sanitarium and General Hospital but was declared dead upon arrival.

Sab-a was among the first barangay officials in Cebu City to have faced community transmission of the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) in a village.

Sitio Zapatera, Barangay Luz made national headlines as more than 200 individuals in the area proved positive to the virus.

Sab-a led the COVID-19 response in the barangay, which eventually became the template in treating community transmissions in other barangays in the city. /rcg
