LUCENA CITY — Soldiers from the Philippine Army’s 2nd Infantry Division based in Tanay, Rizal has again donated a part of their daily meal allowance to help typhoon victims in the Caraga region.

Captain Jayrald Ternio, head of the 2nd ID public information office, in a press release Saturday said the soldiers collected a total of P140,000 to help the families affected by storm “Auring” (international name: Dujuan) in the region.

The humanitarian gesture by the troopers was in response to the call for donations initiated by the Jungle Fighter Ladies’ Club (JFLC) for the typhoon victims, Ternio said.

Ternio said the amount will be turned over by the JFLC to the Bayugan Young Leaders Organization (BYLO), a youth for peace organization that was conducting relief efforts in Caraga. The JFLC is composed of wives of officers and soldiers and female civilian employees of the 2nd ID who are active in advocating service to the people in support of the military.

Lynette Almerol, JFLC adviser, recalled how the BYLO was among the first to helped JFLC during their series of relief operations across Rizal province after typhoon Ulysses (Vamco) in November last year.

“Your continuous efforts in helping others in these tough times inspire us to do more and support causes that may change the lives of others,” Almerol told the members of BYLO.

In December last year, the soldiers from the 2nd ID also donated P151,900 from their meal allowance to help typhoon Vicky victims also in the Caraga region.

Sisa Cabangbang, JFLC president, expressed her admiration of the soldiers’ willingness to extend help.

“Your sympathies will surely be felt by our brothers and sisters in Caraga. Your act of kindness, no matter how small you think it may be, will go a long way in helping them get through this calamity,” Cabangbang said.

“It is the duty of every soldier to live their life in service of their countrymen, not only in their area of responsibility but in every part of the country,” Major General Greg Almerol, 2nd ID commander, said.

The torrential rains brought by Auring two spawned floods in the Caraga region on Feb. 21 and inundated agricultural lands and homes.

The estimated damage to agriculture rose to P79.38 million based on the Department of Agriculture’s (DA) bulletin on Friday.
