Police still looking for witnesses in tricycle driver’s killing in Lapu-Lapu

CEBU CITY, Philippines — Police are still looking for witnesses and for footage of the security cameras in vicinity of the shooting attack that killed a tricycle driver, who is a Muslim, on March 5, 2021 in Kagudoy Road in Barangay Basak, Lapu-Lapu City.

They still could not find any witnesses to the to the fatal shooting of Saidato Masarong Saumay, 25, at past 9 p.m. that day, as he was driving his tricycle in Kagudoy Road, said Police Corporal William Baring, desk officer of the Lapu-Lapu Police Station 4 or the Marigondon Police Station.

Baring said initial investigation showed that Saumay was shot in the head and body as he was traversing Kagudoy Road in his tricycle.

He said that policemen at the Marigondon Police Station responded after being informed of the shooting.

However, he said that when they reached the crime scene, they only found the bloodied body of Saumay, whom they rushed to the Lapu-Lapu City Hospital in Barangay Gun-ob, but the hospital’s attending physician declared the victim as dead on arrival.

Baring said they could not find any witness to the killing and aside from that, they could not also find any empty bullet shells at the crime scene.

For now, he said that they were checking if there were CCTV footage in the establishments near the area of the crime scene that might identify the killer in the shooting.

This is the second shooting incident in Lapu-Lapu City involving a Muslim in less than a month.

On February 23, 2021, Abdullah Pabilla, Lapu-Lapu City’s Muslim Affairs Office head, was shot dead by motorcycle-riding assailants near the Clean and Green Office within the Lapu-Lapu city hall compound.
