The remains of 26-year-old canyoneering guide Aldrin Carba will be laid to rest in his hometown in barangay Poblacion, Moalboal town in southwestern Cebu this afternoon.

Carba’s fellow tour guides and former guests in his adventure tours arrived yesterday  to pay their respects to the so-called canyoneering pioneer.

Rachel Carba, the late guide’s sister, told Cebu Daily News some of those who visited his brother’s wake were from Manila and Cagayan de Oro.

“My brother was a kind man. He had a good sense of humor. He loves me and our mother,” she said.

Carba also engaged in mountain climbing, trekking, wake boarding, and biking.

Remembrance
“We planned that all his equipment will be kept in his room for remembrance,” Rachel said.

When Cebu Daily News went to his wake last week, Aldrin’s mountain bike and wake board were inside his room.

Photos of his past adventures were on display in the living room.

Carba’s family and friends called him as ‘Ya Man.’

Tranquilino Temblor, his 23-year old cousin and assistant said Aldrin chose the name ‘Ya Man’ which means ‘God Bless’ in Jamaica. Temblor was with Carba when he fell at the Kanlaob river in barangay Compostela, Alegria, southwest Cebu the other week.

He’s still thinking if he would continue his cousin’s passion.

“Siguro mopadayon ko ug (Probably I would consider continuing as) guide if I already have the complete equipment and training,” he said.

Temblor said he has been into canyoneering after he was introduced to it by his cousin Aldrin last May.

The Alegria municipal government seeks training for their own local tourist guides while the canyoneering activity is still suspended in the area.

Alegria Mayor Verna Magallon said they coordinated with the Cebu provincial government and the Department of Tourism (DOT) for the training.

“The suspension of the canyoneering activity will take more or less one month. We also need to set proper guidelines for the safety of everybody before we can resume it,” Magallon said.

A meeting is scheduled next week between the Alegria municipal government and local tourist guides from Badian and Moalboal towns to explain the suspension of canyoneering and other adventure sports.
