CEBU CITY, Philippines — The much-awaited National Downhill Mountainbike Championship Trials of the PhilCycling supposedly happening on August 27 to 29 in Danao City, north Cebu has been moved to another date.

Due to the increasing COVID-19 cases in Cebu Island, the organizers from PhilCycling and the host city, through the Danao City Sports Commission (DCSC) rescheduled the mountain bike event to October 29-31, 2021.

DCSC announced the postponement through a post on their Facebook page.

“Our goal is that after the situation improves in the country, downhillers will be given ample time to get back in shape and be able to practice. Our ultimate goal is not only to find the best of the best but also to ensure the best of health for all participants and officials. We will ensure that we are cleared by both National, Regional, and Local IATF officials to proceed with the competition,” said the statement.

“We are hoping for your patience and understanding. Your health and safety are of utmost importance as well as the health of our countrymen. We will be constantly updating everyone on the current situation here in Cebu. Thank you so much! Stay home and stay safe everyone. Be vaccinated and please follow the health protocols that the government is asking us to do. Thank you.”

The downhill competition is expected to draw hundreds of cyclists from all over the country including those who competed in the MTB National Championships last June that was also held in Danao City.

The MTB National Championships drew a record number of 50 plus cyclists who competed in different categories with most hoping to make it to the national team.

Top bets Niño Surban and Ariana Dormitorio lorded the men’s and women’s elite divisions, respectively. Both are also expected to compete in the upcoming downhill competition.  /rcg
