Natividad tops Cepca’s Valentine’s Day chess special tourney
CEBU CITY, Philippines — Richard Natividad ruled the “Heart to Sports, No to Drugs: Valentine’s Day Chess Special,” of the Cebu Executives and Professionals Chess Association (Cepca) and the City of Lapu-Lapu Office for Substance Abuse Prevention (Closap) last Sunday, February 13.
Natividad, one of the Toledo City Trojans’ woodpushers for the Professional Chess Association of the Philippines (PCAP), finished the 13-round Swiss system tournament with 10.5 points coming from 10 wins, two losses and one draw.
The 42-year-old Natividad, also a former varsity player of Southwestern University (SWU) bagged the P2,000 purse for emerging on top.
National Master (NM) Jerish John Velarde finished second with 10.0 points while International Master (IM) Barlo Nadera grabbed the third place honors with 10.0 points as well. NM Velarde earned the second place for accumulating higher tiebreak points over IM Nadera.
The fourth to 12th placers in the tournament were Bhell Ortiz (10.0), NM Edsel Montoya (8.5), Ronald Ganzon (8.5), NM Elwin Retanal (8.5), NM Rogelio Enriquez Jr. (8.0), Fide Arbiter (FA) Lincoln Yap (8.0), and Anthony Makinano (8.0) respectively.
The top kiddies participants were Darren Corro and Kevin Alcedo while the top two lady participants were Edelyn Vosotros and Wena Escalicas.
All the mentioned wood pushers received cash prizes from Closap, the official sponsor of the tournament.
