IM Mascariñas is No. 2 player in PCAP chess tourney

CEBU CITY, Philippines — International Master (IM) Rico Mascariñas is now the No. 2 woodpusher in the Professional Chess Association of the Philippines (PCAP) All-Filipino Conference’s Top 25 players.

From 17th, IM Mascariñas, who plays for the Toledo City Trojans, climbed to the second spot. He has 20 wins, four losses and two draws after winning both his scheduled matches in last Saturday’s action.

He is behind Pasig City King Pirates’ Eric Labog who has 20-3-3 (win-loss-draw) and ahead of Caloocan Load Mana Knights’ Jan Emmanuel Garcia (18-2-6). 

Also included in the Top 25 players of PCAP’s All Filipino Conference is Bryle Arellano of the RCM Cebu at the 24th spot with 15-8-3 (win-loss-draw) slate.

Last Saturday, the Trojans beat the Rizal Batch Towers,16.5-4.5, in their first match and went on beating Quezon City Simba’s Tribe,17-4, to climb from sixth place to fourth in the southern division standings with an 8-5 (win-loss) record along with 153 points.

IM Mascariñas played his part by winning his matches against Caloocan City by beating National Master (NM) Elias Lao Jr. of Rizal in both the blitz and rapid rounds.

His teammates Jinky Catulay, Bonn Rainauld Tibod, and Cristopher Tabulado won their matches against Kelly Ann David, Jaymarc Gutierrez, and Gerone Anore of Rizal respectively.

In their match against Quezon, IM Mascariñas lost to Danilo Ponay in the blitz round, but beat the latter in the rapid round. The Trojans went on winning both the blitz and rapid rounds to route Quezon City. 

Iloilo Kisela Knights remain on top of the southern division standings with 12-1 (win-loss) slate followed by Davao Chess Eagles (9-4) and Negros Kingsmen (9-4) at third. The Chess Eagles has a higher accumulated points of 173.5 while Negros has 169 points.
