Capitol won’t impose sanctions on tour guides
The Cebu provincial government won’t impose sanctions on tour guides who have resumed offering canyoneering adventure tours in Alegria town.
Baltazar Tribunalo, Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) chief, said these guides can only be asked to stop from doing so because there are no policies and guidelines yet on how these tours should be run.
“Dunay mga nakasulod nga mga grupo gikan sa Moalboal ug Badian. Kining mga grupoha, wala makahibalo nga gipasirad-an diay (There were groups that entered from Moalboal and Badian towns.
These groups don’t know that the activity had been closed),” he told Cebu Daily News in a phone interview.
Tribunalo said he learned about the ongoing canyoneering activities from a colleague during a mountaineering course at Mt. Manunggal in Balamban town, last Sunday.
Provincial Tourism Officer Grace Paulino said she only knew about it yesterday.
She said she will still have to check on Alegria town’s tourism office for details.
The canyoneering course in Alegria was temporarily closed following the death of tour guide Aldrin Carba last July 26.
Tribunalo said the Alegria municipal government knows about these canyoneering groups.
Since then, he said the provincial government hastened the creation of the proposed Eco-Adventure Management Board to oversee resorts and establishments offering extreme outdoor activities.
Tribunalo said he will visit the local government units this week to discuss these proposed policies.
