A gun-for-hire suspect was shot dead while his companion was arrested after he refused to yield his .45 pistol to the police in F. Ralota Street, sitio Karagwa, barangay Poblacion in Danao City, northern Cebu yesterday morning.

Supt. Elmer Lim, Danao City police chief, said someone called them up at 12:40 a.m. to report that an armed person was roaming the area.

He said he sent PO2 Jumar Salomon, PO2 Thomas Redan and PO1 Rene Catamora to investigate the incident.

Lim said they spotted Louie Jay Cortes carrying a .45 pistol and identified themselves before approaching him.

Lim said Cortes, a resident of barangay Tuburan, Danao City responded by pointing his pistol at them. Cortes’s gun didn’t go off, causing Catamora to fire back, hitting Cortes’s forehead.

Cortes was rushed to the Cebu Provincial Hospital in Danao City but failed to make it.

Lim said Cortes was a gun-for-hire employed by a drug syndicate. His companion identified as 31-year-old Joie Ian Gomez was arrested later.
