Metro Cebu peaceful during holidays: police
Police said the observance of All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ in Metro Cebu was peaceful with no major crimes recorded in the cities of Cebu, Mandaue and Lapu-Lapu.
In Cebu City, Supt. Alet Virtucio, deputy chief of operations of the Cebu City Police Office (CCPO) said the cemeteries in barangays Carreta, Calamba and Cabantan had zero crime incidents along with the Cebu Memorial Park (Cempark) and Queen City Gardens from Oct. 31 until yesterday afternoon.
He said they mostly confiscated bladed objects like knives that were used by visitors to clean the tombs of their departed loved ones. No one was arrested for drunken behavior.
The Cebu City Fire Department said a fire hit the open area outside the Cebu South Bus Terminal (CSBT) at N. Bacalso Avenue, barangay Pahina Central, Cebu City at past 2 p.m. yesterday.
F02 Renato Borres, fire investigator said the fire was put out 17 minutes later.
Garbage
He said the fire was caused by the sparks that fell from the iron being cut by construction workers at a nearby building.
The Department of Public Services (DPS) collected six tons of garbage last Saturday.
About two tons were collected from flower vendors along P. Lopez Street, said Randy Navarro, head of the city sanitary landfill operation.
Navarro said they are yet to collect garbage from the cemeteries.
In Mandaue City Insp. Jimmy Aguisanda, chief of Mandaue City’s Centro police precinct said 16,000 people visited the city’s four big cemeteries in barangay Guizo last Saturday and yesterday.
Engr. Ricardo Mendoza of Mandaue City’s Solid Waste Mangement (SWM) Board said they kept reminding vendors and visitors to properly dispose their garbage.
In Lapu-Lapu City Senior Supt. Armando Radoc, acting Lapu-Lapu City police chief, said traffic was manageable during the two-day observance despite the 18,000 visitors to the city’s three cemeteries.
