The Lapu-Lapu City government is putting to good use the taxes it collected from the Mactan Cebu International Airport (MCIA).

By next school year, more than 100 classrooms will be built for the city’s public schools. These classrooms are built from taxes paid by the MCIA which Lapu-Lapu City Hall had been trying to collect for sometime.

Dr. Eduardo Ompad, the school division superintendent of Lapu-Lapu City, thanked Mayor Paz Radaza’s administration for fully supporting the education sector.

A substantial part of the MCIA’s initial tax payments went to the Special Education Fund (SEF).

Dr. Ompad said the news classrooms will cut into half the classroom shortage in the city.

He said the mayor assured them that the remaining backlog of classrooms will soon be addressed as MCIAA is already cooperating with the city government and expressed willingness to pay its tax obligations.

In an agreement last May, the MCIA agreed to pay P37.2 million of real property taxes to Lapu-Lapu City. This is just a small portion of the back taxes the city government is collecting from the airport which now runs close to P2 billion.
