Two houses in different subdivisions were damaged by a landslide in barangay Casili, Mandaue City at 5 p.m. last Friday.
Limestone rocks and soil fell and damaged the home and swimming pool owned by Sonny Sandico located on a cliff in Montana Heights Subdivision.
The rocks and soil also crashed on the house located 35 feet below owned by Jason Almagro in Casili Hills Subdivision, said Felix Suico, head of the Mandaue City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office.
The 30-year-old caretaker of the Almagro home, Kent Borling, was sleeping when he heard the rocks falling on the roof and got out. Almagro’s family is in the US and he asked Borling, his brother-in-law as caretaker.
Arsenio Sicad, Cubacub barangay councilman, said Sta. Lucia Realty, the developer of Montana Heights Subdivision didn’t build a concrete riprap wall that would have cushioned the limestone rocks and soil.
Suico said he advised Borling and other residents to evacuate. Borling said he and his relatives decided to rent an apartment.
“Our lawyer said the damage may reach P600,000 but Jason said they won’t live in the house anymore,” he said.
Suico said a representative of Sta.Lucia Realty talked with the homeowners for mitigation measures to prevent another landslide.
He told reporters that the rains caused by typhoon Seniang could have caused the landslide.
