Batch 1999 off to hot start in Cecaba hoop tourney

DEFENDING champion Batch 1999-BMC Hospital Systems/Hainanese Delights started its title-retention bid on a high note after it nipped Batch 2006-1st ACY Shipping Corp./Cebu Regal Pension House, 71-62, last Sunday at the start of the Cebu Eastern College Alumni Basketball Association (Cecaba) 14th Dr. Chen Lieh Fu Memorial Cup unfolds at the Cebu Coliseum.

Mark Bukiron finished with 17 points, seven rebounds, three steals and two assists, while reigning MVP Earn Saguindel delivered 14 points, six assists as Batch ’99 remained unbeaten dating back to the previous season, where it completed a 19-game sweep en route to winning the crown.

Albert Uy and Lawrence also scored in double figures for the Batch ’99 with 13 and 10 markers, respectively.

Gino Abella was the lone bright spot for Batch 2006 after he exploded for a game-high 32 points.

Also taking off to a good start was Batch ’80s/90s/2011- KOI Herbal, which drubbed Batch 1987/2000-Vancere Toys, 54-45.

Raymondo Sypongco fired 15 markers, Paul Cabellon had 11, while Jeffrey Go added for Batch ’80s/90s/2011, which also drew eight points, seven rebounds and three assists from Joel Chan.

Harold James scattered 14 points, 15 rebounds to lead Batch ’87/2000, while Alfie Miranda Sy added 10.

In the other game, Batch 1997/Solane iStyle pulled off a 67-49 routing of Batch 2003/Dimsum Frito.

Denver Dano and Edison Uy led Batch ’97 with 10 points each, while Batch 2003 was spearheaded by Jim Paul Yankee, Stephen Delit and Calvin Ang, who each wound up with 11 points.
