THE Cebu Provincial Board approved on Monday a resolution urging the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) and the local government units (LGUs) to monitor the prices of commodities and items that are popular Valentine’s Day gifts.

PB Member Arleigh Jay Sitoy, in his resolution, said that businessmen usually take advantage of the occasion and drastically increase the prices of these items to maximize profit, which is disadvantageous to the public.

Sitoy said there would be high demand for flowers, chocolates, stuff toys, balloon arrangements and other gift items during the love month and it is best for DTI to monitor the different establishments where these items are sold.

The LGUs should also help protect the interest of their constituents by helping in the monitoring.

At the Freedom Park in Carbon Market, prices of fresh flowers have already increased.
