A math teacher of a national high school in Tabuelan town, northern Cebu was shot in the hip by one of his students past noon yesterday.
Geronimo Flores, 43, of the Juan Pamplona National High School, survived the attack.
Police said the suspect, 22-year-old Elmer Arcillas, 22, held a grudge against the teacher.
Arcillas was upset that the math teacher, who lives in the poblacion, Tabuelan, had asked for a meeting with Arcillas’ grandmother to discuss the student’s habitual tardiness and absences.
Police said other students described the heated argument between the teacher and student during their Math class about 10 a.m. yesterday.
At one point, Flores allegedly challenged his student: “Maayo pa og mag-sport ta sa gawas (Let’s settle this outside).”
After the class, both men went home for lunch.
Police said Arcillas was seen having lunch in an eatery near the school’s gate when the teacher drove by on a motorcycle.
Armed with an unknown caliber firearm, Arcillas approached his teacher, and fired a shot but missed.
Arcillas fired a second shot which hit the teacher, who fell to the ground.
Police said the student then fired a third shot but missed.
The student then fled, while the teacher, was brought to the town’s hospital.
