Cebu School of Chess to host major tournament Sept. 16
CEBU CITY, Philippines — The Cebu School of Chess is hosting a major chess tournament on September 16, 2023, dubbed as “IntChess Asia Youth Championships: Powered by Chess Infinitum” at the City Mall along N. Bacalso Avenue, here.
More than a hundred woodpushers, mostly youngsters are expected to compete in the tournament which aims to discover Cebu’s next chess grandmaster.
Out-of-town players from Cagayan de Oro, Bohol, Pagadian, and Bacolod, including high school and college varsity players are also expected to vie in this tournament.
The event is open to 22-year-olds and below who are active members of the NCFP.
The Cebu School of Chess got much-needed support to mount the event from United States-based Cebuana Lulu Sevillano, the sister of Grand Master (GM) Enrico Sevillano, and other notable players Mitch Vergara, Women’s International Master (WIM) Susan Itaas, IntChess Asia, and Chess Infinitum.
Also, they earned support from the Cepca headed by its president Jerry Maratas.
Over P40,000 worth of cash prizes await the champion up to the 15th placers.
The champion will pocket P10,000, while P5,000 awaits the second placer, and P3,000 for the third placer.
Also, special awards such as the top schools, both public and private, top two age groupers, and top two female competitors are up for grabs.
The tournament will follow a nine-round FIDE-rated Swiss system format with 15 minutes starting time and five five-minute increments.
Some of Cebu’s best young woodpushers such as Edelyn Vosotros, Daniel Baylosis, Chris Aldritz Pondoyo, Kent Delig, and Apple Rubin have already confirmed their participation.
