SHAABAA Season 26: Diputado leads Batch 2012 to another victory

CEBU CITY, Philippines —  Two of Sacred Heart Ateneo Alumni Basketball Athletic Association (SHAABAA) defending champions had contrasting fates in their respective games on Sunday evening, Sept. 10, at the Magis Eagles Arena in Mandaue City. 

Division C reigning champions, the Heritage Supreme Land Developer-Batch 2012, routed Batch 2015, 92-61, while Division B defending champs, the Cebu Landmasters-Batch 2003, faltered in the hands of ’04 The Win-Batch 2004, 50-60.  

In Batch 2012’s lopsided victory over Batch 2015, former pro cager Adven Jess Diputado put another jaw-dropping game after scoring 28 points. He paired it with nine rebounds, three assists, and two steals to lead his team to victory.

His teammate Alexander Cole Lim had a double-double game of 14 points with 16 boards, five assists, two steals, and two blocks. Dave Wilson Yu, Julius Salvador Cadavis, and Laiel Jomer Medalle chipped in 16, 11, and 10 points, respectively.

Batch 2015’s Chaz Cokaliong led his team’s losing efforts with 14 points while Brian Treveno and Irvin Dumol each scored 10 points. 

BIG UPSET WIN

Batch 2004 staged a huge upset over Batch 2003 behind Ervin Lopena’s double-double game.

Lopena tallied 16 points with 12 rebounds, seven assists, and one steal. 

Christopher Consunji added 14 points with five rebounds. 

Batch 2003’s Daryle Tan and Wilmer Rodney Ong spoiled their double-double outing in their loss to Batch 2004. 

Tan had 15 markers, and 11 boards with six assists, while Ong scored 15 points to go with 10 rebounds, and teammate John Lery Chik scored 10. 

DIVISION B GAMES

In the Division B games, Crossfit-Subtero-Batch 2006 edged Gateway Motors-Batch 2007, 66-54, behind Jan Galo’s 21 points and Daren Ong’s double-double outing of 16 points and 11 rebounds. 

Also, Puresteel Manufacturing Corporation-Batch 2011 beat Insular Square-Batch 2005, 82-63. Bernard Chioson led Batch 2011 with his double-double game of 13 points, 12 rebounds, seven assists, and two steals. 

Batch 2005’s Elddie Cabahug spoiled his 33-point performance in their defeat. 

DIVISION A GAMES

In Division A, Bayfront Hotel-Batch 1990-1997 won over ARQ-Batch 2001, 84-65, behind Chad Go’s outstanding 32-point game. 

Go also tallied eight rebounds, two assists, and three steals, while his teammate Roderick Mangubat chipped in 21 points.   

Buck Richnold Sia and Dave Lim each had double-double games. Sia scored 13 points with 11 rebounds, while Lim had 11 points, 17 boards, and seven assists. 

Wendell Ong scored 15 points in Batch 2001’s defeat. 

On the other hand, Speed Demon Vivant-Batch 1994-95-96 demolished Yangtze Cooling Ice Systems-Batch 1992, 70-52.

Junie Alejandro led Batch 94-95-96 with his 22-point game, while Joel Co had 27 points for Batch 1992. 

In the lone Division C game, Batch 2021 thrashed Batch 2022, 103-87. 

Rey Marcus Fuentes IV tallied a rare triple-double game of 20 points, 16 rebounds, and 10 assists. 

Two of his teammates Pol Astillero and Walter Franz Yu each had a double-double game in their dominant win. Astillero tallied 17 points and 11 boards, while Yu had 18 points and 10 boards. 

Rey Tristan Fuentes’ staggering 53-point score wasn’t enough to give his undermanned team the victory, so as Robert Mayam’s double-double game. 

Mayam had 28 points, 16 rebounds, eight dimes, and seven steals. /dcb
