Collapsed road in Cebu City to be fixed within two days, assures contractor

CEBU CITY, Philippines (UPDATED)— The construction company responsible for the construction project of an establishment in Barangay Sto. Niño assured the restoration of the portion of the road that collapsed on Wednesday afternoon, September 13, 2023.
A Facebook post of Cebu City Vice Mayor Raymond Alvin Garcia said the contractor of the New Patria de Cebu, Dakay Construction and Development Corporation, assured him that the affected portion would be restored within two days after the incident.
On Wednesday, at around 2 p.m. a portion of the road along Leagspi Street, near the Metropolitan Cathedral, beside the construction project of New Patria de Cebu, collapsed.

“Thankfully, wala’y reported injuries and the contractor, Dakay Construction and Development Corp., has assured me that the area will be restored and reopened [to] at least one-lane traffic within two days,” he said in a Facebook post.
Garcia also expressed his apologies to the people who have been affected by the flooding in various parts of Cebu City due to the weather.
Following the incident, the Cebu City Transportation Office at 2:16 p.m. issued a temporary closure of the road along Legaspi Street, MJ Cuenco Avenue, Osmeña Blvd, and Lapu-Lapu Street.
According to Harold Alcontin, head of the Cebu City Disaster Risk and Management Office, the construction had something to do with the collapse of a section of the road.
“Tungod sa ilahang construction unya wala nay kadaluyan ang tubig ba, napundo didto ni sip in sa atong yuta mao nang ni-collapse,” he told CDN Digital on Thursday, September 14.
(Because of the construction, the water had no way out so it converged in one area and sipped into the soil, causing it to soften which led to the collapse.)
He added that the Dakay Construction and Development Corporation are already working on the restoration of the affected portion of the road.
Meanwhile, the vice mayor has reminded the public about the city-wide cleanup which would happen on September 16, Saturday and the city hall employees would visit the rivers and waterways.
“We now need to look at other measures addressing runoff water gikan sa mga developed and presently-being-developed nga mga sites, where natural flood-control features – like riparian vegetation such as trees, shrubs, grasses and vines nga natural unta nga motubo kilid sa kasapaan; ang atong mga wetlands and flood plains; ug, ang atong mga meanders, kana bitaw’ng natural nga liko-liko sa atong mga sapa nga mao untay mopahinay sa dagayday sa tubig – ato nang gipang semento,” Garcia added.
