Roundnet PH teams bag medals in ARF Cup in Bali, Indonesia
CEBU CITY, Philippines — Roundnet Philippines National Team earned three podium finishes in the recent Asian Roundnet Federation (ARF) Cup in Bali, Indonesia.
The four-day competition was held from September 21-24, 2023.
The national team comprised mostly of the members of Dumaguete-based Negros Oriental Roundnet Association grabbed two silver medals in the women’s division and mixed division. They also earned a bronze medal in the men’s division.
The women’s silver-winning team was comprised of team captain Mary Frances Navera and Aileen Kerstin Anlap of the Negros Oriental Roundnet Association which was established in 2022.
They competed not just with ordinary teams, but against the best roundnet teams from Australia, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Taiwan, and Japan.
The Filipinos proved they were at par with the best in the world despite the lack of funds and government support.
Roundnet is an emerging sport in the Philippines introduced in Central Visayas back in 2015 in Dumaguete City. It was first played by ultimate frisbee players who found passion in this emerging sport that is popular in the United States according to Navera.
“They began playing informally at the sides until it picked up during the pandemic (2020) and then gradually organized local tournaments, leading to the growth of the roundnet community in the region,” Navera explained.
“In Cebu, it was just recently introduced — the year 2023. But they don’t have consistent players jud. They play weekends lang and it’s not always tungod gamay pa lang tig play.”
Navera added that roundnet is a special and unique sport that promotes inclusivity and accessibility because of its simple yet action-packed mechanics.
It doesn’t require a grand stadium and expensive sports equipment for people to engage.
Thus, they’re very optimistic that their recent campaign in Bali, Indonesia will further promote the sport and earn the support of the government.
“Since the establishment of our group, we have been actively promoting and participating in roundnet events, both locally and nationally, to foster the sport’s growth and development,” said Navera. /rcg
