Businessman nabbed for allegedly brandishing gun while drunk in Compostela
CEBU CITY, Philippines – A businessman from Barangay Panangban, Compostela, Cebu will be spending some time in jail after he was arrested on Wednesday afternoon, September 27, 2023, for allegedly brandishing a gun outside his house multiple times.
The arrest, based on a search warrant was conducted from 3:46 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the alleged suspect’s residence.
The arrested person was identified as 48-year-old Rene Tapayan Sonido, married, and a businessman.
The police report showed that Sonido allegedly always carried and displayed a .38 caliber revolver outside his house especially when he was drunk.
The gun-toting incidents alarmed his neighbors which prompted them to report to the authorities.
After a case build-up and surveillance, the police applied for a search warrant.
On September 22, 2023, a search warrant was issued against Sonido for violation of the Republic Act 10591 or the Comprehensive Law on Firearms and Ammunitions.
The warrant was issued by Judge Allan Francisco Garciano, executive judge of the Regional Trial Court Branch 83 in Mandaue City.
On Wednesday, September 27, operatives of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group Mandaue City Field Unit in coordination with Compostela Municipal Police Station apprehended Sonido.
The alleged suspect’s residence was searched by the operatives along with two witnesses: Barangay Councilors Alex Castro and Anastacio Lupo.
They recovered from Sonido’s house two .38 caliber revolvers, eight pieces of live ammunition, and one brown sling bag.
According to the report, an inventory and marking of the pieces of evidence seized was conducted on-site in the presence of the suspect and witnesses.
The operation was conducted as part of the “Oplan Paglalansag Omega” in relation to loose firearms.
Sonido is detained at the detention cell of the Mandaue City Field Unit (CFU) Office.
Compostela is a third-class municipality located approximately 31 kilometers north of Cebu City. /rcg
