Dr. Rowena Burden, a staunch critic of Cebu Governor Gwendolyn Garcia announced on Thursday, September 28, her intention to run for Cebu governor in the 2025 polls.

Dr. Burden said that since last year a group of businessmen had asked her to run for the position in 2022 against Garcia but she turned the offer down saying she was not interested in the position.

However, she said she changed her mind after witnessing the poor state of the province’s healthcare system calling it “a matter of life and death” for the constituents of Garcia.

She also chided the governor for abusing her power, for publicly shaming those who criticized her administration, and for being corrupt.

When CDN Digital sought Governor Garcia’s reaction, the province’s top executive merely replied “No comment.”

Girl raped by 16-yr-old “boyfriend” and his pal in Lapu-Lapu City

A 13-year-old girl accused her 16-year-old boyfriend and his 21-year-old pal of raping her after a drinking spree on Wednesday evening in Lapu-Lapu City.

She was rescued by Pajo Barangay Captain Lyndel Bullos after her father and brother sought their assistance in locating her whereabouts.

The girl, who resides in Mandaue City, was successfully rescued and one of the suspects who was only 16 years old was arrested. Meanwhile, the other suspect who is 21 years old, was able to evade arrest.

In her earlier statement, the victim told Bullos that she met the 16-year-old suspect on Facebook and they became boyfriend and girlfriend. They then agreed to meet on Wednesday and had a drinking spree. When she got drunk, that’s when the two suspects took turns in raping her.

Poisonous banana spider of Brazil aids in erectile dysfunction treatment

In medicine, three decades ago, Brazilian researchers began studying a curious side effect of banana spider bites: the toxin left victims with priapism, a painful and persistent erection.

The scientists were inspired to develop a synthetic molecule using some properties of the spider’s poison to create a gel to treat erectile dysfunction, which is now undergoing promising clinical trials.

At the Ezequiel Dias Foundation, a medical research center in the state’s capital Belo Horizonte, a biologist delicately grabs one of the spiders with a pair of tweezers and stimulates its fangs to get a few drops of venom.

The center then sends the venom to the Federal University of Minas Gerais which has been researching which component could be replicated to treat erectile dysfunction, which affects tens of millions of men around the world.
