A woman from barangay Panadtaran, San Fernando town in southern Cebu will stand trial for allegedly burying her newborn daughter in her backyard last year.
Jackielyn Soroño was charged with infanticide for the crime of killing a child “less than three days of age.”
Bail was recommended at P120,000 by the Regional Trial Court in Cebu City.
Soroño was arrested by policemen on July 24 last year after she was seen by a neighbor burying her baby near her home. The neighbor, a 14-year-old boy, saw Soro dig a hole in the backyard at 3 p.m.
The witness and his friend later went to the area and were horrified to see a baby’s leg.
They ran to their neighbor who reported to the matter to the San Fernando police precinct.
According to PO1 Mary Jane Estrera, the mother admitted giving birth in a urinary at 9 a.m. on July 24, 2013.
The mother wanted to “conceal the dishonor of giving birth to a child born out of wedlock.”
Police said she abandoned her daughter for hours before she eventually decided to bury the body.
The mother did not submit any counter-affidavit to refute the charge.
