A 41-year-old barangay councilman was arrested for uprooting the signage bearing the message “I love Bantayan Island” in barangay Poblacion, Santa Fe town, Bantayan island, northern Cebu last Saturday afternoon.

Police said Edward Espinosa was drunk when he took down the signage fronting Yoonek Beach Resort that was flocked by domestic and foreign tourists.

Insp. Romeo Caacoy, chief of the Sta. Fe police, said the suspect also assaulted the Senior Insp. Alejandro Batobalonos, Argao police chief, who warned him about his misdeed.

Batobalonos was in the area spending the Holy Week holiday with his family when he witnessed Espinosa’s misbehavior.

Caacoy said Espinosa just came from a drinking binge with relatives and friends. He said witnesses told him that Espinosa yelled that the sign should be replaced with the message “I Love Sta. Fe.”
