Lapu-Lapu sitio hit by fire now under state of calamity
The fire's impact on Sitio Santa Maria in Barangay Pusok, Lapu-Lapu prompts state of calamity declaration
LAPU-LAPU CITY, Philippines – The Lapu-Lapu City Council declared Sitio Sta. Maria in Barangay Pusok under a state of calamity after a massive fire struck on Tuesday afternoon, December 12, 2023.
During a special session on Wednesday, the council acknowledged the severe impact of the fire on the community.
Councilor Annabeth Cuizon announced a P5,000 rental subsidy for three months, totaling P15,000, specifically for fire victims who are homeowners and voters of Lapu-Lapu City.
The City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO) will also provide Emergency Shelter Assistance, with homeowners receiving P15,000, and sharers and renters receiving P5,000 and P3,000, respectively.
The CSWDO’s latest data indicates 1,400 families, or 7,870 individuals, affected by the fire incident.
Meanwhile, Mayor Junard “Ahong” Chan has brought together various stakeholders to create a comprehensive plan to aid the fire victims.
Discussions include immediate relief efforts, such as providing temporary shelter, food, and clothing to displaced families. Chan is also keen on identifying long-term solutions for community rehabilitation.
Several agencies have expressed their intention to pledge support for the fire victims.
