A 31-YEAR-OLD man was fatally shot by police in an alleged shootout in barangay Buaya, Lapu-Lapu City yesterday morning.
Mark Vincent Cañizares succumbed to gunshot wounds in the abdomen and arms.
Police said Canizares fired the first shots at a police team that had gone to General Aviation Road to respond to an armed person alarm.
Insp. Alden Zambrano, chief of the Pusok Police Station, said that when the police identified themselves, Canizares drew a .38 revolver and opened fire.
Police said Cañizares continued firing shots until the gun malfunctioned. This allowed SPO2 Roberto Pepito to return fire.
Police brought the wounded Canizares to the Mactan Doctors’ Hospital where he later died.
Police recovered a .38 revolver with three bullets, a spent shell and bullet stuck in its cylinder.
Ten sachets of suspected shabu were also seized from the man, police said.
Police later found out that the Yamaha Mio motorcycle with plate number 2962-GR used by the man was a stolen vehicle that was reported missing in March.
Police said Canizares was a suspect in a shooting incident in barangay Buaya that took place last April 1.
